Blocked drains are annoying and can be expensive. However, with some simple habits, you can prevent many problems. Here are our best tips from practice.
In the Kitchen
The biggest problem in the kitchen is fats and food scraps. Never pour fat or oil down the drain – they solidify in the pipes and form stubborn deposits. Collect fat in a container and dispose of it with household waste. Food scraps belong in the organic bin, not in the drain.
In the Bathroom
Hair is the main cause of blockages in the bathroom. Use hair traps in the shower and washbasin and clean them regularly. Soap residue and toothpaste can also accumulate – regularly flush with hot water.
In the Toilet
The toilet is not a rubbish bin! Hygiene articles, wet wipes, cotton buds, and other items belong in the waste bin. Even 'biodegradable' products can cause blockages as they don't decompose quickly enough.
Regular Maintenance
A simple tip: Pour boiling water down every drain once a week. This dissolves light grease deposits and keeps the pipes clear. Avoid chemical cleaners – they can damage the pipes.
